Royer sparks Polar Bear victory

WILLIMANTIC, Conn. – Kristi Royer poured in a game-high 22 points and grabbed 17 rebounds to help Bowdoin upset Eastern Connecticut 61-53 Wednesday in an NCAA Division III New England Regional Tourney first-round matchup.

Lora Trenkle chipped in with 14 points for the Polar Bears of Brunswick.

Allison Coleman led the Warriors with 15 points and 14 rebounds.

At Lewiston, Bianca Belcher’s game-high 21 points led the White Mules to an ECAC tourney victory over the Bobcats.

The Mules blew things open in the second half, scoring 10 of the first 12 points en route to a commanding 47-29 lead. Bates never got closer than 12 after the run.

Sarah Walsh chipped in with 15 points and 14 rebounds for the Mules, who were seeded No. 5 in the tourney.

NESCAC Player of the Year Kate McLaughlin was the No. 4 Bobcats’ leading scorer with 19 points. She also had nine rebounds.

At Waterville, the Lions held off a second-half comeback by Colby behind freshman Robert Hennigan’s game-high 26 points, including six 3-pointers, to help Emerson bounce the White Mules from the ECAC tourney.

Rob Murphy chipped in with 10 points for the Lions, who were up seven at the half only to see Colby cut it to one with a minute to play.

Senior Sam Clark finished off his career with a double-double, netting 23 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Damien Strahorn notched 14 points.
