DEER ISLE – This year, Haystack Mountain School of Crafts marks the 50th anniversary of its first educational sessions. The international craft school has planned a number of events commemorating this benchmark in its history, and also has begun a fund-raising campaign to support special projects and endowments for programs and scholarships.
“An anniversary commemorates the past,” said Director Stuart Kestenbaum, “but it also is a time when an institution can look to the future and envision what it will be. Our 50th Fund will sustain Haystack in the future, enabling it to continue as a trailblazing institution specifically by providing support for programs in need of a more stable financial base. These include our theme and international sessions, conferences, publications and programs for Maine people.”
The 50th Fund also will support: visiting writers and artists from other fields to enhance Haystack sessions or residencies; specialized studio equipment to make innovative workshops possible; and fellowships and scholarships for emerging artists in need of financial assistance or new opportunities to advance their work.
Additionally, Haystack is establishing a new fund in memory of its founding director, Francis Merritt (1913-2000), who died on Dec. 27.
“Over the past year we have received significant gifts from foundations, trustees and other donors,” he said. “We are now asking our loyal alumni and friends for their help. Our goal is to raise $50,000 – commemorating 50 years of workshops – which, when added to early leadership gifts, will push our 50th Fund well over the initial goal of $500,000.”
