Bangor teams finish well in Science Bowl

GORHAM – Two Bangor High School teams, competing Saturday in the New England regional Science Bowl at the University of Southern Maine’s Gorham campus, took second and third places.

A team from Lexington, Mass., won the overall event by answering questions about molecular orbital theories and glycosidic linkages – the links between the many sugars that make up a starch. The Lexington team will advance to the national science bowl to represent the New England region.

The Science Bowl, now in its 11th year, is an annual competition for high school math and science students from around the country. Sixty regional science bowl competitions were held in the United States last year. Saturday’s regional competition marked the first time the science bowl has been held in northern New England.

The second-place Bangor team was made up of students Bo Shi, Eric Franzosa, Matthew Ellis, Stanislav Gotchev, Jeremy Yardley and coach Helmut Koch.

The third-place Bangor team comprised Kate Baldacci, Lucy Gross, Josh Wood, Adam Kinney, David Scweine and coach Cary James.
