ORONO – The University of Maine women’s hockey team split a pair of games over the weekend, earning a 3-2 victory over Brown Sunday and falling to Harvard 8-2 Saturday.

Maine concluded its season with a 15-14-1 mark overall, 10-13-1 in ECAC play, narrowly missing an ECAC playoff spot. The 15 wins are a team record.

In Sunday’s game, goalie Dawn Froats made 20 saves in the third period to preserve the Black Bears’ victory over sixth-ranked Brown.

Karen Droog scored the winner, her 22nd goal of the season, 21 seconds into the third period.

Jarin Sjogren and Lauren Steblen tallied for Maine in the first period, and Rebecca Ouellet, Jamie Hill, and Andrea Keller each posted an assist. Froats (12-3-1) finished with 34 saves on 36 shots, and tied a school mark with wins in goal.

Kathleen Kauth scored twice for Brown (18-6-3). Pam Dreyer made 29 saves on 32 shots.

In Saturday’s game, Jennifer Botterill’s tallied two goals and two assists to lead the No. 4 Crimson.

Tammy Shewchuck added two goals for 20-8 Harvard. Ouellet and Droog put in a goal each for Maine.

Women’s basketball

Bowdoin 72, Salem State 65

At Salem, Mass., Bowdoin went 29-for-34 from the free-throw line en route to an overtime win in the second round of the NCAA Div. III Tournament.

Kristi Royer hit all 12 of her attempts from the line and tallied 23 points and nine rebounds for the Polar Bears. Jessie Mayol chipped in with 11 points.

Betsy Nichols notched 23 points and 17 rebounds for Salem State.

At Amherst, Mass., Bianca Belcher tossed in 15 to lead Colby College to a Division III ECAC Championship win over Wellesley College.

Sarah Walsh notched 14 points and 12 rebounds for the White Mules. Jen Hallee chipped in with 10 points.

Kate Lyren led Wellesley with 16 points and seven assists. Jan Gooding put in 13 points.

Men’s basketball

Florida 94, Kentucky 86

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Teddy Dupay matched his career high with 28 points Sunday to help No. 6 Florida earn a share of the Southeastern Conference title with a 94-86 victory over co-champion Kentucky.

Udonis Haslem had 20 points and nine rebounds as the Gators (22-5, 12-4) held off repeated rallies from No. 15 Kentucky, which fell behind by 15 points early and never got closer than seven.

Keith Bogans had a career-high 29 points for the Wildcats (19-9, 12-4).

Matt Bonner hit a 3-pointer to give the Gators an 86-76 lead with 2:01 remaining and the game essentially became a free-throw shooting contest that Florida survived.

Kansas 75, Missouri 59

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Drew Gooden scored 19 points and sparked a 21-7 second-half run that led the No. 10 Jayhawks, who avenged a 75-66 loss in January.

Kansas (23-5, 12-4) split the season series with their border rivals for the sixth straight year and finished second to Iowa State in the Big 12 regular-season race.

Missouri’s Kareem Rush, the Big 12’s leading scorer, returned after a seven-game absence because of a thumb injury and was just 1-of-7 for a season-low two points.

Clarence Gilbert had 19 points for the Tigers (18-11, 9-7), who shot just 32 percent and had 21 turnovers.

Georgetown 79, Notre Dame 72

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Mike Sweetney scored 19 points and Ruben Boumtje Boumtje added 16 as the No. 21 Hoyas dominated.

Georgetown (23-6, 10-6) made 10 of 12 free throws over the final 2:17 and earned a first-round bye in this week’s Big East tournament.

Troy Murphy had 19 points for No. 13 Notre Dame (19-8, 11-5), which won the Big East West and will also have a bye.

Syracuse 93, St. John’s 91, 2 OT

NEW YORK – Senior point guard Allen Griffin scored 17 of his career-high 31 points in the two overtimes and No. 19 Syracuse used an impressive performance at the free-throw line to snap St. John’s 15-game winning streak over Big East opponents at Madison Square Garden.
