BANGOR – There aren’t many records for tournament 3-pointers that the Cony of Augusta girls basketball team doesn’t hold. So it wasn’t a big surprise when the No. 1 Rams made five long-range shots in the first half of Saturday’s Eastern Maine Class A quarterfinal against No. 8 Presque Isle.

Cony only made two 3-pointers in the second half, falling two short of a record nine the Rams set in 1990. But those two hoops would prove to be key in Cony’s 55-38 victory at the Bangor Auditorium.

The Rams, now 19-0, will face No. 5 Hampden Academy in a semifinal Thursday at 7:10 p.m.

Cony had cruised to a 26-8 lead when the Wildcats (9-11) scored 13 unanswered points in a stretch that started in the second quarter and went into the third. Cony center Jauna Andrews made two free throws to push the lead back to seven points, but PI’s Billi Blanchard hit a 3-pointer from the left wing to cut it to 28-24.

Cony answered immediately. Ashley Underwood drained a 3-pointer on the Rams’ next possession, and after a Blanchard free throw and a few turnovers both ways, hit another 19-footer. Underwood went 3-for-3 from the arc en route to 13 points.

“We didn’t quite capitalize as much as we needed to [on Cony’s turnovers] but we cut it to four,” PI coach Jeff Hudson said. “They made some big shots, two [3-pointers], and instead of being down four we’re down 10 just like that.”

The Wildcats cut it to four points early in the fourth quarter, but Cony outscored Presque Isle 19-8.

“We just needed to box out, play good defense,” Cony captain Natasha Jackson said of the Rams’ momentary lapses.

Andrews scored 10 of her game-high 16 points in the fourth quarter. Lindsay Frye (11 points) made two 3-pointers.

Presque Isle played much of the game in a 1-3-1 zone with a press. But the Wildcats forced only 11 turnovers compared to their 26.
