Don’t look out the window or you won’t believe this: Spring is coming. Sure, it’s a way off yet. And it will be well into April or maybe early May before things really warm up. But the winter is going to begin winding down before long.
March is the immediate problem. February was bad enough, but it mercifully had only 28 days. March has the full 31, and so far it has brought one storm after another and plenty of temperatures down close to zero. So let’s consider how to get through it.
A few can chicken out, of course. Give up and go off to Florida or Arizona or one of those islands in the Caribbean. But some folks don’t feel like spending the time or the money for a prolonged vacation. A long weekend away can do wonders for stiffening up the spine for the rest of the winter. Watch for the travel bargains.
Right here in central and Down East Maine, there are fine opportunities to make the best of the rest of the winter. Skiing, sledding and ice-skating have been great so far and should go on for a good while. Ice fishing is not near over, but remember that there’s a $50 fine for jigging. Some of the roads in Acadia National Park are kept remarkably clear, so that a hike along the shore provides good exercise and a thrilling view of the pounding surf against the granite rocks. On one of the warmer days, a few chirps and hoots will be a reminder that the birds are at it again.
When wind chill gets down to the painful level, there are plenty of places to work out indoors, on treadmills, stationary bicycles and those fancier machines with weights and springs to help get us back in shape and get rid of winter fat.
In preparation for spring, it soon will be time to start seedlings for flower, vegetable and herb gardens to come. And a big bouquet of daffodils by the window against the snowy background will remind us that winter really is ending.
In the meantime, rake the snow off the roof to prevent any more ice dams. And kick of your boots in the mudroom, so you don’t track up the floors inside.
