Brigadier Gen. Phillip E. Tukey Jr. has died. Thankfully, according to reports, he died suddenly and without pain, but for those of us who knew him, especially those of us who served with him, we mourn.

He was the man who organized and led the Maine Air National Guard for most of its early years and he was the man who set standards for those who followed.

The great reputation that the Maine Air National Guard has enjoyed has been earned because, in large part, of his guidance. In an era that doesn’t seem to appreciate character, principles, high standards and integrity, the loss of this great man is profound. And great he was. We have lost a lot of fine people who served with the Maine Air National Guard, but this is our toughest loss.
