BEDDINGTON – A detective with the Maine State Police was injured Monday night when his car struck a moose on Route 9.

Lt. Wesley Hussey, the commander of Troop J, said Detective Stanley Jandreau suffered facial cuts and a gash to his lip when the animal broke through the windshield on Jandreau’s 1998 Chevrolet Lumina cruiser.

Jandreau was taken to Down East Community Hospital in Machias and Hussey said he expected the detective to be released later in the evening.

Hussey said that Jandreau was driving east on Route 9 a little before 7 p.m. when he struck the moose from behind. The animal apparently was walking on the side of the road, but the detective did not see him, the lieutenant said.

The moose came up over the windshield and onto the top of the car, breaking the windshield, Hussey said.

The animal died in the accident and is in the possession of the Maine Warden Service, the lieutenant said.
