Northeastern fires hoop coach Keeling

BOSTON – Northeastern University men’s basketball coach Rudy Keeling of Londonderry, N.H., was fired after failing to produce a winning record in five seasons, the school said Tuesday.

The Huskies finished the season 10-19, losing in the America East semifinals to Delaware.

Keeling declined to comment after being reached at his home. He had two years remaining on his contract, he said.

Keeling’s best record was a 14-14 finish in the 1997-1998 season. His career record at Northeastern was 48-92.

Before coming to Northeastern, Keeling, 51, coached America East rival Maine for eight seasons, compiling a 106-122 record.

At Maine, Keeling had losing records in his first three seasons before posting a 17-15 mark in 1991-92. He had two more winning seasons at Maine, 18-11 in ’93-94 and 15-13 in ’95-96.
