AUGUSTA – The Maine Legislature has killed a bill to allow authorities to seize vehicles used by people arrested as habitual offenders.

The Criminal Justice Committee voted unanimously against the bill, effectively killing it.

Other states have policies to confiscate vehicles of offenders. New York police have seized thousands of cars of drunken motorists. Louisiana police can seize cars of drivers who can’t show proof of liability insurance.

Maine has no records showing how many people with records of repeat motor-vehicle offenses continue to drive, but police say they encounter them frequently.
