DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Joe Drapeau went 4-for-5 with two home runs, seven RBIs, and four runs scored Thursday night while powering the University of Maine to a 14-9 baseball victory over host Bethune-Cookman College at Jackie Robinson Park.
The Black Bears improved to 6-0, matching a feat not achieved since UMaine’s 1903 team won its first eight contests.
Drapeau, a sophomore third baseman from Biddeford, hit a two-run homer in the first inning, belted a grand slam in the second, and provided an RBI single in the fifth while pushing his team-leading RBI total to 20.
Jon Hambelton smacked a solo home run, two run-scoring doubles, and an RBI single for the Bears, while Jesse Carlton contributed a double and two singles. Mike Livulpi, Mark Reichley, and Alain Picard stroked two singles apiece in UMaine’s 20-hit outburst.
Senior transfer Simon Stoner went 5? innings, improving to 2-0 with relief help from Mike Reid, Adam Labelle, and Eric Johnson.
Stoner didn’t have to pitch with much pressure, as his teammates staked him to a 7-0 lead through 11/2 innings.
In the first, Mike Ross was hit by a pitch with one out, then Drapeau drilled a 3-2 pitch over the fence in left field to make it 2-0.
The Bears tacked on five runs in the second inning. Keith Genest singled, Reichley reached on a fielder’s choice, and Livulpi singled to right, loading the bases.
One out later, Drapeau hit his grand slam. Hambelton added a two-out solo shot to make it 7-0.
The Bears pushed the lead to 10-0 in the fourth on an RBI single by Picard and Hambelton’s run-scoring double. They picked up two more in the fifth, with Drapeau providing an RBI single.
George Bailey paced 8-19 Bethune-Cookman with a double, two singles, and three RBIs. Skye McSweeney smacked a grand slam in the sixth, and Sharbel Torres added a double and two RBIs.
Former Black Bear Jason Graham pitched in relief for the Wildcats, allowing eight hits and three runs in 4? innings.
UMaine takes on Fordham today at 2 p.m. at Daytona Beach.

Husson splits doubleheader
In Florida, Kelly Dow threw a three-hitter in the first game as Husson College of Bangor earned a split of its doubleheader against Washington College (Md.).
Husson won the opener 10-0, but the Sho’women came back to take the second game 6-4.
In the first game, Sami Hibbard and Jen Merry each singled twice to back Dow’s pitching. Abby Henderson hit a home run.
Wendy Rodney, Mary Clough and Sue Thomas singled for Washington.
In the second game, Tina Bocuzy and Mary Drillon singled to back winner Emily Watsoba.
Erin Weston and Dow had two singles each for Husson and Nikki Steinhart tripled.
UMaine loses two
UMaine dropped to 4-8 as Liberty University defeated the Bears 6-0 and then the University of South Florida beat the Bears 7-4.
Erica Sobel cranked a home run for the Bears in the second game. Ashley Yuhas drove in a run.
Candace Jaegge was the losing pitcher in the first game and Carrie Green was the loser in the second.
