Collar helps UMaine improve to 8-0

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – University of Maine freshman Mike Collar scattered seven hits while allowing just one run to lead the Black Bears to a 5-1 victory over Iowa Saturday morning at Jackie Robinson Stadium.

Maine is now 8-0 and off to its best start since 1903. The Black Bears were to face the University of Akron Sunday night, but the game Zips was postponed due to weather. Akron is already scheduled to play another team Monday, so the game could not be immediately rescheduled. Maine is looking for another team to play on Monday. Another win would give the Bears their best start ever.

In Saturday’s game, Maine scored two runs in the first inning. Mike Livulpi opened the game with a single, went to second on a Mike Ross walk, and advanced to third when Iowa starter Nick Jensen hit Joe Drapeau with a pitch. Jon Hambelton plated Livulpi with a sacrifice fly and Ross scored on a Jesse Carlton single. Carlton also homered in the fourth and Alain Picard drove in Drapeau in the sixth. Hambelton doubled and scored in the eighth.
