Joe Campbell and Alison Smith of Bangor High School have been named the Big East Conference players of the year.
Campbell, who led the Rams to a 21-1 record and the Class A state championship, received the boys award while Smith, who paced the Rams to a 16-3 mark, was named the league’s top girl player.
First-year Brewer coach Mark Reed was named the boys Coach of the Year. Earl Anderson, who coached the Nokomis Warriors to the school’s first basketball state championship, was named the girls’ Coach of the Year.
Brewer athletic director Dennis Kiah was honored with a conference recognition award and Bangor girls basketball coach Tom Tennett received the service award.
Big East all-star games set
Players from the state championship Bangor boys and Nokomis girls basketball teams will be on the MacKenzie Gymnasium floor at Old Town High School on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. for the second Big East Conference senior all-star games.
Bangor coach Roger Reed will head the boys’ North team that will include Joe Campbell, Josh Johnson, Jim Shea and Joe Vanidestine from the Class A state champion Bangor team.
Nokomis coach Earl Anderson will be in charge of the girls’ South team that will feature Nicole Palmer and Laura Pelkey from Nokomis of Newport, which won the girls’ Class A state championship.
Tip-off for the girls game is set for 5:30 p.m. with the boys’ game to follow. Admission is $3 for adults and $2 for students.
