Canaan elects 3 selectmen Voters turn away one incumbent

CANAAN – One incumbent was returned to office and another was ousted in this year’s heavily contested race for the Board of Selectmen in Canaan on Monday.

Louise Townsend will return to the three-person board with 262 votes, but fellow board member Paula Robinson was defeated in her bid for re-election. Robinson earned 85 votes in the eight-way race.

Townsend will be joined on the board by John Graf, the top vote-getter Monday with 310 votes, and Gary A. French with 290.

Selectmen are elected annually.

Other unsuccessful candidates for selectmen were Jolene Brown, 41 votes; Gary Johnston, 37; Joel Stetkis, 96; and Kelly White, 51.

Ray Judkins was re-elected as road commissioner with 288 votes over challenger Donald White with 80 votes.

Four candidates were elected to the five-person planning board and one candidate was elected by write-in ballot. The four candidates running for the board were Cyrus Carter, Craig Heavey, Matthew Morneault and Mary Pooler. Jerry Phair was elected to the board as a write-in.

None of the other races was contested.
