PORTLAND – A Freeport man is facing charges after allegedly leading police on a car chase through five southern Maine towns.

Robert Hamilton, 18, eluded seven police departments, four spike mats and two police roadblocks, and drove at speeds of up to 85 mph before being forced to pull over on Route 1 in Arundel.

The chase began at 12:30 a.m. Monday, when Wells Police Cpl. Dan Bean tried to pull Hamilton over for driving erratically. Hamilton took off, and led police through Wells, Ogunquit, York, Kennebunk and Arundel, police said.

Police said the car Hamilton was driving belonged to someone else, and said Hamilton was not authorized to use it.

The chase lasted approximately 45 minutes.

Hamilton is facing numerous charges, including driving while under the influence, driving without a license, eluding a police officer and passing a police roadblock.

He was expected to be appear Tuesday in York District Court.
