Bears’ Labelle and MacDonald one-hit Rattlers

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Mike MacDonald and Adam Labelle combined on a one-hitter Thursday night, leading the University of Maine baseball team to a 3-1 victory over Florida A&M.

The Black Bears snapped a two-game losing streak while improving to 9-2 heading into today’s 2 p.m. game against the Rattlers.

MacDonald, a freshman righthander from Camden, pitched six innings of one-hit, one-run ball while improving to 2-0. He carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning, when Linnell Bradley led off with a single.

MacDonald struck out two, walked two and hit three batters.

Labelle, a sophomore righthander, pitched three innings of no-hit shutout ball to register his first save. He struck out two and walked one.

Jesse Carlton paced the UMaine offense with two singles, including a two-out RBI single in the fifth inning that proved to be the winning run. Quin Peel contributed a pinch-hit RBI single with two out in the seventh to score Joe Drapeau of Biddeford, who had led off with a single.

Pat Tobin added a double for the Bears.

UMaine took a 1-0 lead in the third when Mike Ross drew a one-out walk and scored with two out when Jon Hambelton’s deep fly ball was misplayed for an error by the center fielder.

The Rattlers equalized in the third when MacDonald hit the first two batters and walked the next before Bradley delivered a sacrifice fly to center field. However, MacDonald pitched his way out of further trouble as catcher Drapeau threw out a runner trying to steal and MacDonald recorded an inning-ending strikeout.

Andy Pace took the loss for 4-15 Florida A&M despite allowing only one earned run in six innings.
