Hambelton sparks Bears

HAMDEN, Conn. – Senior designated hitter Jon Hambelton went 4-for-7 with a home run and four runs batted in Sunday afternoon, helping the University of Maine baseball team sweep a doubleheader from Quinnipiac.

The Black Bears won the opener 10-2, then took the second game 7-2 while completing the program’s most successful spring break swing ever with a 12-2 record.

UMaine received excellent pitching in both ends of the twinbill and backed the staff with ample offensive production.

In the opener, Rusty Tucker (2-0) and Adam Labelle combined on a five-hitter. The Bears got all the runs they ultimately would need during a five-run first inning.

Mike Livulpi led off with a double, Mike Ross walked and Joe Drapeau of Biddeford plated a run with a double down the left-field line. Hambelton cleared the bases with a two-run double to left and scored on Mark Reichley’s two-out RBI single.

The 2-9 Braves scored in the second inning on a two-out, two-run error by Mike Ross.

The Bears tallied three runs in the fifth on solo homers by Hambelton and Alain Picard, a Quin Peel double and Simon Williams’ pinch-hit RBI single.

UMaine added two in the seventh on an RBI single by Peel and Mark Reichley’s run-scoring groundout.

In the nightcap, Kris Ehmke (2-0) and Matt Truman of Otisfield teamed up to pitch a five-hitter.

Ehmke spread out five hits and struck out four in six innings before Truman struck out the side in the seventh.

UMaine struck for two runs in the first inning. Peel beat out an infield single, then stole second with two out. Hambelton followed with a run-producing double to left-center and rode home on Jesse Carlton’s RBI single to center.

Quinnipiac equalized in the bottom of the inning when Ehmke hit Chris Stonaha with a pitch, then surrendered a two-run homer to Tim Mangano.

The Bears went in front in the fourth when freshman Simon Williams of Portland stroked a two-out home run to center field. UMaine added a run in the fifth when Tucker slammed a one-out, pinch-hit home run to center.

UMaine put it away in the sixth when Aaron Young of Augusta smacked a two-out, three-run homer.
