Leather shortage spurs layoffs at Falcon Shoe

LEWISTON – Falcon Shoe is laying off 40 of its 200 employees, a cutback linked in part to a worldwide leather shortage arising from outbreaks of mad cow and foot-and-mouth disease.

“There’s a couple of things” that led to the layoffs, said owner Nick Bailey, whose company makes high-end hunting-style and work boots. “The recession really has hit our customers,” he said.
