BANGOR – Miss Maine Basketball Morgan DiPietro, Lani Boardman and Katie Stailing all are attending college on basketball scholarships next fall.
However, when the West Classes A-B team needed a clutch shot Saturday afternoon, it was Ashley Bossie who came through for her star-studded team.
The 5-foot-11 post player from Kennebunk drained a 3-pointer on an inbounds play with one second left, lifting the West A-B All-Stars to a 68-66 victory over the East squad during the 21st Maine McDonald’s East-West Senior All-Star Games held at Husson College’s Newman Gymnasium.
In the early game, the West Classes C-D stars edged the East team 63-61.
In the Classes A-B game Bossie may not have the notoriety of some of her teammates, but she displayed her talent by scoring 16 points, nine in the second half, and grabbing seven rebounds.
The game-winner was the only 3-pointer of her senior season.
“We were supposed to pass to Lani [Boardman] at the elbow, but I guess she wasn’t open,” said a smiling Bossie. “I knew there were only five seconds left, so I knew I had to pop it and I never shoot from the outside.”
York’s Boardman, who will attend Vermont, contributed 13 points, seven rebounds and two blocked shots. DiPietro of Greely in Cumberland Center, who is bound for Division II Bentley, and Morse of Bath’s Stailing (Rhode Island) combined for only seven points and 10 rebounds.
The East stars battled back from a 13-point first-half deficit behind aggressive defense and the offensive play of Orono’s Sarah Marquez, who netted 13 of her 16 points after intermission.
Marquez scored eight of her team’s 12 points in the final eight minutes. She converted a conventional three-point play to give the East a 61-58 lead with 4:16 to play, then nailed a 3-pointer with 36 seconds left that gave her team a tenuous 66-64 edge.
The West cut it to one on a Boardman foul shot with 17 seconds left, then got the ball back when Bossie rebounded a miss. The West eventually called a timeout with five seconds to play to set up the game-winner.
“It was a lot of fun. We’ve been talking about this game for a while because of bragging rights,” said Marquez, who had played AAU ball with players on both squads.
Terra Curtis of Bangor scored 13 points for the East, while Melissa Gott of Mount Desert Island added 11 points, six rebounds and two blocks. Gott had a bit more pressure as at least two Division I coaches were expected to be on hand to evaluate her talents.
“I just wanted to not think about anyone that’s watching,” Gott said. Lani [Boardman] is really good and she’s going to Vermont. I just wanted to do my best and see how I would match up with her.”
Foxcroft Academy’s Amy Kelley had five points, five rebounds and two blocks for the East.
In the C-D contest, Cassie Carver of Mattanawcook Academy in Lincoln nearly banked in a desperation 35-foot runner as time expired, but the West held on.
The East clung to a 61-60 lead after Elizabeth Howard of Washburn hit a 14-footer at the 1:26 mark, but Ashley Woodcock of Jay made two free throws with 45 seconds left and Michele Gagnon of Dirigo in Dixfield added one with five seconds left to help their team prevail.
The East got the rebound and Carver dribbled down the right sideline and let a shot fly. It went off the square and glanced off the front of the rim.
East teammate Jessica Noyes of Woodland explained why the shot was even more dramatic for her.
“When [Mattanawcook] came over to our place this year, there were only 4.5 seconds left and it was the same exact moment as it was out here,” Noyes recounted. “We were at the foul line and [Carver] got the rebound, went and shot from half-court and made it. They beat us by one point. We were hoping it would go in [today].”
Heady guard Malorie LeClerc of Winthrop sparked the West with 14 points and six rebounds. Karyn Labbe of Jay chipped in with 10 points and six rebounds, while Winthrop’s Jennifer Laney came up with nine points and 10 boards.
The East spread out its scoring, but Noyes broke into double digits with 11 points. Sara Ricker of Shead in Eastport and Howard tallied eight points and four rebounds each, while Brittany Howe of Narraguagus in Harrington added five points and six rebounds.
Trailing 59-52, the West ran off eight straight points, including five by Laney, during a two-minute span to regain the lead, 60-59 with 1:37 remaining.
The West stars turned it around by aggressively attacking the basket and enticing the East to foul.
Noyes spoke about what the game meant to the players.
“It’s kind of sad because some of us aren’t even going to play next year,” said Noyes, who plans to study nursing at the University of Maine. “This was fun coming out here.”
