I am writing to protest International Paper’s refusal to accept the offer submitted by Maine Wood Innovations, LLC in cooperation with the Passadumkeag Employees Buyout Association. The impact these two sawmill closures will have on Northern Maine will be devastating to our economy.

Maine Wood Innovations represents a collaborative effort between some of Maine’s best public and private interests. The firm’s long-term interest is in developing value added innovative products using the technology currently being developed at the University of Maine in wood composites as well as wood recycling and recovery. The combined efforts of this group and the employees represent an opportunity this state needs to see implemented.

International Paper is the recipient of several million dollars in Tax Increment Financing and BETR equipment tax reimbursements. This state values the investment IP has made. However, the strong outrage stemming from IP’s decision to close Costigan and Passadumkeag could well jeopardize these future benefits for that company as well as other deserving companies located in Maine.
