University of Massachusetts-Lowell hockey coach Tim Whitehead, a former University of Maine assistant coach, has resigned after rejecting a contract extension. UMass-Lowell athletic director Dana Skinner offered him a two-year extension but Whitehead indicated he wouldn’t return for less than a three-year extension.

University of Massachusetts-Lowell hockey coach Tim Whitehead, a former University of Maine assistant coach, has resigned after rejecting a contract extension.

UMass-Lowell athletic director Dana Skinner offered him a two-year extension but Whitehead indicated he wouldn’t return for less than a three-year extension.

Whitehead compiled a 76-95-13 record in his five years at UMass-Lowell including a 19-16-3 mark this past season. UMass-Lowell, picked to finish eighth in the preseason coaches poll, wound up fifth and upset New Hampshire in the Hockey East Tournament quarterfinals before losing to regular season and tournament champion Boston College 5-1 in the semis.
