ROCKLAND – Former state Rep. Judy Powers has been named executive director of Mid-Coast Children’s Services.
Marge Mitchell, chairman of the board of directors, made the announcement, noting that Powers has served as the agency’s interim director since Feb. 1.
During her two terms in the Maine Legislature, Powers served as a Democrat from Rockport and sat on the Judiciary and Appropriations committees and was a member of the Substance Abuse Commission.
She previously worked as head teacher, administrative director and interim co-director for the Children’s House Montessori School in Rockport. She moved to the midcoast in the 1970s to work for the Hurricane Island Outward Bound School.
Located in Rockland, Mid-Coast Children’s Services provides comprehensive early intervention services for at-risk or developmentally delayed children from birth to age 5. Services include evaluation of child development and behavior, parent support, home teaching, play groups for children, parent education, family counseling, case management and consultation, and Early School, a preschool program located at the agency’s 272 Park St. location.
The agency recently has expanded the Early School program to accommodate approximately 30 additional children. A modular classroom has been leased, allowing for more classroom space.
