PHILADELPHIA – The University of Maine baseball team received strong pitching performances in three of four games on the weekend but finished up with a pair of doubleheader splits against Drexel in its America East debut. Both Drexel wins came in extra innings.

The Black Bears fell 2-1 in eight innings in Saturday’s first game, took a 2-0 win in the nightcap, won 10-0 in Sunday’s opener and fell 7-6 in 11 innings in the weekend’s final game.

UMaine moved to 14-4, 1-1 in America East play. Drexel is 4-16, 2-2.

In Sunday’s first game, freshman Mike Collar spun a nifty complete-game four-hitter, striking out four and walking just one, as the Bears rolled.

Mike Ross went 4-for-4 with a double, a triple and four RBIs to pace the 13-hit UMaine attack.

Mike Livulpi added three hits and three RBIs.

In Sunday’s second game, the Dragons salvaged a split when Maine pitcher Adam Labelle hit Harry Ley with a pitch with one out and the bases loaded in the 11th inning.

The Black Bears had erased a 5-1 deficit and taken the lead with a five-run seventh-inning rally, but Drexel answered with a single run in their half of the inning.

Joe Drapeau led the Bears with four hits, including his fifth home run of the year and a double. Livulpi added two singles.

Ben Sniecinski had three singles for the Dragons.

In Saturday’s first game, Maine’s Rusty Tucker didn’t allow an earned run, but his seven-inning, four-hit effort was wasted when the Dragons scored on an error in the eighth.

Danny Girado led off the bottom of the eighth with a double to left-center field. Ley followed with a grounder to third base, but UMaine’s Pat Tobin committed a throwing error on the play and Girado scored.

Tucker struck out four and walked on while dropping to 2-1. Shane Carroll struck out 12 in 7? innings for the Dragons.

Aaron Young doubled for the Bears and Quin Peel homered, singled, and drove in a run.

In Saturday’s second game, Simon Stoner struck out seven and walked three to earn the win and Matt Truman pitched a scoreless seventh to pick up the save.

The Bears scored all the runs they’d need in the first, as Livulpi walked and eventually scored on a Jon Hambelton single, and Drapeau also walked and scored on a Peel single.

Rob Martine and Girado were the lone Dragons to record hits against the Bears.
