PORTLAND – Two city councilors and Portland’s police chief teamed up Wednesday in support of a plan to promote use of trigger locks on firearms at no expense to the city.
Under an ordinance proposed by Councilors Tom Kane and Jim Cloutier, police would provide trigger locks to all Portland residents seeking them, all new buyers of firearms and all holders of concealed-weapons permits in the city.
Chief Michael Chitwood said an anonymous donor was giving 1,000 safety locks to his department, and other donors are expected to follow suit.
