Charges filed after scrape at Bangor club

A brawl Thursday night, reportedly triggered by an underage patron’s unwillingness to leave a Harlow Street nightclub, resulted in assault and disorderly conduct charges for six area people.

Arrested in connection with the episode were Jennifer McGraw, 19, of Bangor; Ricky Hendsbee, 19, of Glenburn; Melissa Smith, 21, of Greenbush; and Eddie Zavatski, 22, of Bangor, Bangor police detective Lt. Timothy Reid said Friday.

Reid said two minors from Glenburn – a 17-year-old male and a female of the same age – also were charged, but were taken to the Bangor police station and subsequently released to their parents.

The four adults were taken to Penobscot County Jail, and, as of Friday afternoon, all had been released pending court appearances.

According to Reid, the incident began shortly after 10 p.m., when an employee of the Spectrum’s lounge carded members of the unruly party of six and determined that at least one was under 21, Maine’s legal drinking age. A bouncer was called over to assist after the patron allegedly refused to comply with the employee’s request to leave the lounge.

A fracas involving pushing, shoving and name-calling ensued, Reid said. At least three Spectrum employees suffered cuts and bruises.

The incident remained under investigation Friday, Reid said.

While not considered the cause of the fight, some of the name-calling allegedly involved remarks about sexual orientation. Because of that, information gathered during the police investigation will be forwarded to the state Attorney General’s Office for review, Reid said.

Bangor police charged Ryan C. Shepherd, 24, of Bangor with domestic assault after officers were called to his Pier Street home Thursday for a report of a family fight.

In the stairwell in the apartment complex at 36B Pier St., Officer Tyler Leighton reported, he could hear a woman and man yelling at each other, but inside the couple claimed that nothing was wrong.

Something was wrong, and according to police reports Shepherd’s 21-year-old girlfriend broke down and cried in the bedroom. Each time she made any movement on the bed she would hold her stomach and side as if she were in pain, noted Officer Jeff Small. But she would not say that she had been assaulted, although she did agree to let the police take her to a friend’s house for her safety, according to the police report.

But before that could happen, the woman went into the bathroom. A short time later, Small heard a loud scream coming from the bathroom. Checking on the woman, Small found her examining her head, where a large red patch, about 2 inches by 1 inch, was visible where a clump of hair had once been. Asked whether Shepherd did this, the girlfriend nodded yes. Small asked her again, to confirm the assault, and when she affirmed it, Small went to have Shepherd arrested.

The girlfriend wouldn’t have it, telling the officer that she was OK and that she would take care of it. She even tried to intervene when the officers were handcuffing Shepherd.
