Sanford teacher throws hat into governor race

SANFORD – A Sanford High School math teacher who served four terms in the Legislature said Friday that he plans to run for governor.

James Libby, a Republican from Buxton, said he would make education a cornerstone of his campaign.

Libby said he wants to restore lottery earnings to help fund schools. He also wants to slow tuition increases at the University of Maine, strengthen the University of Southern Maine and oppose any raid on the teacher retirement fund.

Libby, 40, holds a doctorate in public policy and served two terms in the Maine House and two terms in the Senate.

Other Republicans expected to seek the Blaine House include former legislators Peter Cianchette of South Portland and Jane Amero of Cape Elizabeth.
