Maine Maritime cruises to sweep Drexel softball squad takes three of four against UMaine Black Bears

BOSTON – Maine Maritime Academy won its first two games of the season with a doubleheader sweep (29-5 and 18-0) over Wheelock College Saturday.

The Mariners of Castine knocked off Wheelock behind the solid pitching of Corinna’s Vicki Jones.

In the first game, Jones pitched a five-hitter from the mound and went 3-for-6 at the plate with a double, a home run and six RBIs. Jessica Clifford went 4-for-6 with three RBIs and Janey Lesiewicz went 3-for-6 with three RBIs. Kristi Cooper of Lincoln went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and Waterville’s Stacey Ryan had two hits and four RBIs.

Laurie Fraga went 2-for-2 to lead Wheelock.

In the second game, Jones spun a four-hitter while going 4-for-4 with a triple and three RBIs. Abbi Darling of Phippsburg went 3-for-3 with an RBI while Trenton’s Erin Jordan went 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Carr (2-4, 3 RBIs), Ryan (2-5, 4 RBIs), Cooper (2-4, RBI) and Clifford (3-5, RBI) also paced the offense.

Fraga again led Wheelock offensively with another 2-for-2 effort.

Drexel takes 3 for 4 from Maine

At Philadelphia, Pa., Maine’s Ashley Yuhas pitched a three-hitter to salvage a win in the final game of a four-game weekend series with Drexel University.

Drexel won the first three games 1-0, 2-1, and 3-2 before Maine pulled out the finale 1-0.

In Sunday’s first game, Katie Loomis’ double and single led Drexel over Maine. Rachel Levinson, Alicia Good, Cassie Snow, and Kelly Donohoe each singled for the Dragons.

Leigh Ann Hlywak tripled and singled twice with two RBIs to pace the Black Bear attack while Amanda Stevens nailed a single.

In game two, Yuhas ripped two singles to lead Maine to victory. Lauren Dulkis notched a single for the only other hit.

Alicia Good, Lori Swanson, and Laura Tynio each ripped a single to pace the Dragons.

On Saturday, solid pitching allowed the Drexel Dragons to sweep the doubleheader.

Lore Swanson allowed only two hits and struck out 11 in the firsst game. Rachel Levinson nailed a double with an RBI for Drexel as Kristy Heysar ripped a single.

Carrie Green gave up only two hits for the Black Bears of Orono while Lauren Dulkis and Rachel Bain each singled.

In game two, Laura Tynio allowed two hits and struck out eight while also nailing two singles for Drexel in their second win of the day.

Kelly Donohoe nailed a single and a double for Drexel while Lorie Swanson ripped two singles.

Erica Sobel and Candle Jaegge each tallied hits to led the Black Bear attack.

UM-Farmington wins two

At Farmington Saturday, the University of Maine-Farmington swept a doublehedader over Massachusetts College of Pharmacy – 9-0 and 9-3 – thanks to solid pitching.

In game one, Molly Leopin led the University of Maine at Farmington over the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy with a homerun and a double.

Pitcher Heather Marden allowed only one hit and no walks for the Beavers while Andrea Benvenuti and Dorice Reitchel each notched two hits.

In game two, Heather Marden nailed a double and a single to lead UMF to their second win of the day.

Andrea Benvenuti, Dorice Reitchel, and Richelle Dube each nailed two hits for the Beavers as Melissa Lemar pitched four innings with three strikeouts and one walk.

Katie Parish tallied two hits to lead Mass. Pharmacy.

St. Joseph’s gains two wins

At Smithfield, R.I., Saturday, the St. Joseph’s College Monks took two away from Bryant College.

In game one, pitcher Sarah Webster of Searsport allowed only three hits and tallied five strikeouts for St. Jose’s.

Kelly Premo nailed a triple and a single with two RBIs for the Monks of Standish as Sarah Ouellette ripped two hits with four RBIs.

Kara Murphy, Denise Labisi, and Nicole Keene each singled for Bryant.

In game two, Kristen Gaudette ripped two doubles with two RBIs to lead the Monks to their second win of the day.

Sue Picard and Courtney Sirois each notched a double with two singles for St. Joseph’s.

Allyson Fluke and Kara Murphy each nailed a double and a single to lead the Bryant attack.

At Lexington, Mass., Saturday, Don Sawyer’s home run, double, and two singles with five RBI’s led Husson over St. Joseph’s.

Mike Worcester ripped a home run and two singles for the Braves of Bangor while Jared Foster nailed a double and a single.

Justin Lambert’s home run and two singles with four RBIs led the Monks of Standish as Nick Mirabello hit a double and two singles.

Huskies go 3-for-4 over weekend

After sweeping a Saturday doubleheader 12-4 and 15-3 over Rhode Island College in Providence, the University of Southern Maine baseball team settled for a Sunday split, losing 6-0 to Wheaton in Norton, Mass., before rebounding with a 12-11 victory in the second game.

The Huskies, now 13-5 and ranked No. 3 in last week’s New England Div. III coaches poll, saw an 11-game win streak snapped.

In Saturday’s first game, USM, now 13-5, was paced by Pat Toomey, who belted a home run, double, and two singles with four RBIs.

Colin Loveless ripped three singles for the Huskies of Gorham as Tyler Delorme notched a double and a single with two RBIs.

In game two, Pat Toomey cracked a home run and three singles with six RBIs to lead USM to their second win of the day.

Jody Curcuru nailed a triple and a single as Tyler Delorme notched two singles for the Huskies.

In Sunday’s early game, Andy Muller (3-0) pitched a two-hitter while walking two and striking out eight to lead the Lions.

Tyler Delorme led USM with a double.

In the second game, Andy Lang’s RBI bunt single in the bottom of the seventh drove home the winning run. Lang drove in two runs with two singles while Toomey and McDonough each had two singles and one RBI. Colin Loveless of South Paris notched the win in relief with a 1-2-3 seventh.

Colby splits weekend series

Barron Butler scored three goals to lead Colby College to a 13-12 win over Trinity in Hartford, Conn., Saturday, but Chris Condlin’s two goals were the difference Sunday as Amherst knocked off the White Mules 8-6 in Amherst, Mass.

Saturday, Matthew Cohen, Josh Cleaver, and Bill Getty each notched two goals for the 2-4 White Mules of Waterville. Goalie Ben Park stopped 18 of 30 shots.

Ravi Pillay netted five goals for 3-4 Trinity while Mark Tassie put in three. Goalie Eric Wilson made nine saves on 22 shots.

On Sunday, Butler again had three goals to lead Colby. Getty, Cleaver, Bill Spencer and German scored the other goals. Park saved 11 of 19 shots.

Amherst goalie Corey Simonson saved seven of 13 shots.

Women’s Lacrosse

Colby 14, Trinity 8

At Lewiston, Marcia Ingraham notched four goals to lead Colby over Trinity.

Katherine Wheeler put in three goals while Ally King, Amanda Epstein, and Angela Pappas each netted two goals. Goalie Anna Schierberl made 16 saves for the 2-3 White Mules of Waterville.

Anna Sullivan led the 4-5 Bantam attack with three goals while Ashley Taylor put in two. Goalie Kelly Jo Burnett stopped 13 shots.
