UM Bears take 3 or 4 vs. Hawks Drapeau, Hambelton handle Hartford Hurlers

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. ? University of Maine sophomore catcher-third baseman Joe Drapeau, the America East Rookie of the Year and a Freshman All-American a year ago, belted a tie-breaking two-run homer in the seventh inning to give the Black Bears a come-from-behind 6-4 win over the University of Hartford in the first game of Sunday’s doubleheader.

The Hawks turned the tables on the Bears in the second game, scoring a tie-breaking sixth-inning run without the benefit of a hit to rally for a 7-6 triumph which salvaged one of four games over the weekend.

Hartford’s triumph snapped its 18-game losing streak.

Maine had swept the Hawks on Saturday, 2-0 and 19-6.

The Black Bears are now 18-5 overall, 5-3 in America East. Hartford is 3-18, 1-7 in the conference.

Hartford led Sunday’s opener 4-2 entering the sixth inning, but the Bears tied it on freshman Matt Reynolds’ two-out, two-run double. Drapeau had walked and Jon Hambelton singled to open the sixth and both moved up on a passed ball.

Then, in the seventh, Mike Livulpi hit a one-out single to set the stage for Drapeau’s game-winning blast to left. It was his team-leading sixth homer of the season and he would add his seventh in the nightcap.

Hambelton’s two-run homer in the first had staked Maine to a 2-0 lead but Jeff Swedberg’s two-run double in the second and Ron Acabbo’s two-run homer in the fifth gave Hartford a 4-2 lead.

Hambelton had three hits while Drapeau and Pat Tobin had two apiece for Maine. Matt Truman picked up the win with two innings of two-hit shutout relief.

Miguel Marichal had three hits and Swedberg two for Hartford.

In the nightcap, Maine reliever Eric Johnson walked Ryan Waldron and hit Matt Marchese with a pitch in the sixth before a pair of grounders, including Josh Yuhas’ run-producer to first, snapped a 6-6 tie.

The Bears had the tying run at third with one out in the seventh but winner Marichal fanned Mike Ross and induced pinch-hitter Simon Williams to fly to center..

Drapeau’s two-run homer in the sixth had tied the game.

Alain Picard and Mark Reichley hit solo homers in the second for Maine to tie it 2-2 but Waldron’s RBI double in the bottom of the second regained the lead for Hartford.

Picard’s RBI double and a bases-loaded walk to Reichley in the third made it 4-3, but Hartford scored three runs in the fourth on RBI doubles by Matt Denorfia and Marchese and Acabbo’s run-scoring single.

Picard had three hits for Maine and teammate Keith Genest had two as did Hartford’s Waldron.

On Saturday, junior lefty Rusty Tucker fired a four-hit shutout in the opener, striking out nine and walking just one. He improved his record to 3-1.

Tucker and Hawk freshman Swedberg were locked in a scoreless duel until the sixth when back-to-back two-out doubles by Hambelton and Quin Peel supplied Tucker with the only run he was to need.

The Bears added an insurance run in the seventh when Livulpi doubled to left, stole third and scored on Ross’ one-out double.

In the second game, two-run homers by Hambelton and Aaron Young, Reynolds’ two-run single and Peel’s RBI triple keyed a 10-run fourth inning that sewed up the win.

Hambelton and Picard each homered twice for the Bears while Young and Williams also homered.

Hambelton had three hits while Peel, Drapeau, Picard and Young had two each.

Marichal had three hits for Hartford with Waldron and Ryan Gardner collecting two apiece.

Simon Stoner picked up his third win in four decisions.
