Strong resident faces sex assault charges

FARMINGTON – A Strong animal control officer has been indicted on numerous sexual assault charges involving three juveniles.

The Franklin County grand jury indicted Lawrence “Buster” Curtis, 47, on 12 counts of sexual abuse of a minor, five counts of gross sexual assault, three counts of unlawful sexual contact and one count each of witness tampering and violating bail.

Curtis was arrested in February on sexual assault charges stemming from allegations by two juveniles, police said. A third juvenile has come forward since the investigation began, said Assistant District Attorney James Andrews.

Andrews said the incidents go back as far as 1991.

Police said some of the victims were children of members of the Strong Grange, where Curtis is Grange Master. Curtis is also a Maine State Youth Grange leader.

Curtis was convicted in 1984 of six counts of sexual misconduct against a minor.

Andrews said he plans to ask a judge to revoke Curtis’ pre-conviction bail of $25,000 because of witness tampering.

Curtis will be arraigned in Franklin County Superior Court on April 20.
