CARIBOU – During April, the Sexual Trauma and Recovery Services of Aroostook Mental Health Center will promote events to increase community awareness about sexual assault.
“The Clothesline Project” is a visual display bearing witness to the sexual violence perpetrated in today’s society. T-shirts are decorated to represent a particular person’s experiences by a survivor or someone who cares about him or her and are hung on a clothesline for public display. The display is being featured through April 14 at the Aroostook Centre Mall and April 15-21 at the University of Maine at Fort Kent’s Blake Gallery.
Cary Medical Center will present segments with sexual assault advocates on its weekly WEGP-AM 1390 radio show, “To Your Health,” hosted by Bill Flagg.
“Take Back the Night” marches are planned for 7 p.m. Thursday, April 26 in Houlton, Presque Isle and the St. John Valley.
Each march will begin with a rally and guest speaker and end with a march through a charted route. Speak-outs, during which victims and loved ones can perform skits, read poetry, dance or play music to dramatize their experience, will be held throughout Aroostook County the week of April 22 -28.
The month’s events will conclude with a personal safety fair from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 28, at Northern Maine Technical College in Presque Isle. For more information, contact Joyce Knorr at 498-6431, Ext. 136.
