Terriers take two from UM

BOSTON – Boston University’s Robyn Horrick and Robyn King held Maine to just seven hits in two games to earn a sweep in college softball action Tuesday. BU won 4-1 behind Horrick’s two-hitter before King spun a five-hit, 12-strikeout shutout in the nightcap, 3-0.

In the first game, Leslie Linnemeyer blasted a two-run homer. Horrick added an RBI single. Maine got its first run off Terrier pitching in 48 innings on Ashley Yuhas’ RBI single.

In the nightcap, BU got all the runs it needed in the third inning on a two-run homer by Aryn Rangel. They added another run off a Maine error. Pitcher Candace Jaegge went the distance for the Bears, giving up two earned runs on seven hits.

Huskies bomb Beacons

At Boston, Becky Manson went 5-for-5 with a homer and seven RBIs to lead Southern Maine to a pair of wins over UMass-Boston, 29-0 and 13-1.

In the second game, Manson’s solo homer in the fifth was the 14th of her career, tying her with Lisa Abrams (1985-88) for the career lead. She also had a two-run triple in the sixth. Jessica Libby had a two-run single. Jessie Belcher gave up just one hit, striking out six. Alma Medina had the only Beacon hit with a triple.

In the first game, the Huskies were up 23-0 after just three innings. Erica Gagnon struck out 10 while allowing only three hits, all singles. USM sent 13 batters to the plate in each of the first two innings, and pounded out 25 total hits. Alyssa Henderson had three RBI singles. Sarah McLean added a pair of doubles and four RBIs. Sunshine Anders had two triples and three RBI.

At Beverly, Mass., Mike Lucas’ RBI single in the bottom of the ninth, his third hit of the game, supplied the Gulls with the victory.

Andrew Gagnon started the rally with a double and Eric Costantino followed with a single to set the stage for Lucas’ game-winner. Santi DeOleo also had three hits for the winners.

Tyler Delorme had three hits for the Huskies.

UMPI Owls post sweep

At Boston Monday, the University of Maine at Presque Isle swept the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy on Monday, topping Brewer native Ryan Hatch in the opener, 12-3. The Owls took the nightcap 12-7.

In the first game, In the opener, the Owls racked up 13 hits. Sam Michaud had two singles and two RBIs, as did Josh Berry. Bob Tarpey had an RBI double. Josh Roop picked up the win, pitching six strong innings.

Hatch went the distance for Mass-Pharmacy, striking out three. He also had two RBIs on a single.

UM-Presque Isle fell behind in the second game, 6-3 after two innings. The Owls scored six runs in the next three innings to pick up the win. Dustin Armitage led the way with a pair of stolen bases and RBI singles. Greg Ingalls chipped in with an RBI single. Todd Collier struck out five batters in relief.

Hatch and Elvin Vasquez led the way for Mass. Pharmacy with an RBI single each. Mass. Pharmacy combined to make 12 errors in the two games.
