Braves batter MMA pitching for sweep

CASTINE – Husson College pounded out 32 hits against Maine Maritime Academy as the Braves won the opener 20-2 and took the nightcap 9-3 in softball action Thursday.

In the first game, Husson’s Kelly Dow gave up five MMA hits while hitting three singles and a double with one RBI. Abbey Henderson smacked a triple and three singles, and drove in three runs. Jen Merry added three runs on three singles. Kristi Cooper led MMA with two doubles and a single, and Alaina Hanlon added two singles.

In the second game, Erin Weston slammed two triples and drove in a run for the Braves. Husson’s Sami Hibbard singled twice and tallied two RBIs. Janey Lesiewicz tripled and knocked in a run for Maine Maritime.

Thomas splits with UMF

At Waterville, Thomas College gave up seven unearned runs in the third inning of the second game to lose the game and split the doubleheader with the University of Maine at Farmington.

In the first game, Becky Roak had a triple and a double for UMF while Terri Trudell had two singles. Heather Marden allowed only four hits and walked two.

For Thomas, Cortney Corbett had a double.

In the second game, Heather Farrell and Heidi Jeffeman each had two RBI for Thomas.

Roak had a home run for Thomas.

St. Joe’s sweeps Plymouth State

At Plymouth, N.H., Saint Joseph’s pounded out 15 runs and 22 hits to sweep Plymouth State in a doubleheader.

In the first game, Sue Picard had a double and a triple for St. Joe’s while and Deborah Bain had a double and Sarah Webster held Plymouth to four hits.

For Plymouth State, Michelle Knox had a triple.

In the second game, for Saint Joseph’s, Sue Picard had a double while Cortney Sirois added a single.

Adrienne Harvey had a triple for Plymouth State.

At South Portland, Steve Osborne had three hits and five RBIs for Saint Joseph’s College while Justin Lambert scored three runs and drove in another three.

Nick Mirabello scored two and had two RBIs.

For Husson, John Montgomery and Tony Creek each had an RBI.

At Salem, Mass., Jody Curcuru nailed a three-run homer and pitchers Mark Gunning and Alden Pelletier combined for four scoreless innings to spark a comeback win for the University of Southern Maine.

Craig Gureckis had two doubles.

Men’s Lacrosse

Colby 24, Southern Maine 2

At Waterville, 11 different players scored goals for 3-6 Colby College as they crushed The University of Southern Maine 24-2 on Thursday.

Baron Butler, Mike Haimes, Trenholm Boggs and Connor Cooper each scored three goals for Colby while Bill Getty, Blake Grosch, Josh German, Josh Cleaver and Seth White each had two. Ryan and Gabe Duncan Roitman chipped in with one apiece.

Getty had four assists while Grosch had two. Butler, Haimes, Cleaver and White all recorded assists for the White Mules.

For Southern Maine, who drops to 1-8, Joe Cox and John McCabe both had goals while J.R. Moreau had an assist.
