People looking for hot dogs and other goodies at the end of the Kenduskeag Stream Canoe Race in downtown Bangor on Saturday can help a group of excited individuals raise money for a planned trip to Walt Disney World in Orlando, Fla.
Approximately 80 people associated with OHI of Hermon will take this trip next November.
OHI is a nonprofit organization helping people with disabilities live productively in their communities.
Last November, OHI staff and volunteers started making this dream come true for people in the program when they launched their OHI Disney Trip Campaign.
Needing to raise nearly $60,000, Ron Carlow of OHI reports nearly $8,000 of that amount has been raised to date, and OHI currently has two fund-raisers under way to aid in that effort.
OHI is selling raffle tickets that allow the winner to eat out free each night for nine nights at nine different local restaurants.
The raffle tickets are $1 each and may be obtained by calling Duane Hall at OHI, 848-5804, Ext. 119.
The drawing will be Monday, April 30.
But you can also grab a hot dog after the canoe race at the OHI booth and help increase the OHI Disney trip fund.
Carlow said the folks at OHI have lots of people and businesses to thank for contributing to a successful spaghetti dinner and silent auction in February that raised about $1,000.
Among those getting credit for helping out are In-Tyme Programs of Hermon, Shaw’s and Shop ‘n Save supermarkets, Something Different, staff at University College of Bangor, and the UMaine men’s ice hockey team.
Carlow had specific praise for “Susan Little, a member of the University of Maine dining staff, who helped with recipes and the spaghetti sauce,” he said, and the folks at Gunn’s Sport Shop and Wight’s Sporting Goods, whose contributions also helped ensure the supper’s success.
“Things are going well,” Carlow said of the fund-raising campaign, “but we would like to have outside contributors participate.”
If you can make a donation to this worthwhile and wonderful adventure, send a check to OHI, 25 Freedom Parkway, Hermon 04401.
If you have questions about the trip, call Hall at the above number.
For more information about OHI, call Carlow at 848-5804, Ext. 132.
Lorraine Mitchell of the Calais Lioness Club invites the public to attend the organization’s third annual Giant Indoor Yard Sale from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 21, at the American Legion Hall on Calais Avenue in Calais.
Proceeds from the event benefit a number of club charities.
Would you like to be physically active on Earth Day and really make a difference?
Judy Markowsky of the Maine Audubon Society’s Fields Pond Nature Center needs volunteers to help clean up the Penjajawoc Stream where it flows through the Bangor Mall area.
Plastic and other debris now being uncovered by melting snow needs to be removed to help the otter, muskrats, ducks and fish live safely in their natural surroundings.
Volunteers are asked to gather at 1 p.m. Earth Day, Sunday, April 22, at either the Shop ‘n Save or Borders parking lots near the mall.
You should bring your own trash bag, wear gloves and be prepared to follow the directions of project leaders Markowsky, Frank Wihbey, Jim Bird, Joyce Rumery and Sherry Langway.
Volunteers also should wear appropriate footgear since the stream banks are steep and slippery.
Members of the St. John’s Episcopal Church choir, who will be making a missionary trip to England in July, hope you will dine Sunday, April 22, at the Oriental Jade on Bangor Mall Boulevard to help them raise funds for the trip.
The buffet-style dinner has three seatings from which to choose.
The first seating is 4:30 to 5:45 p.m.; the second is 6 to 7:15 p.m.; and the third seating is 7:30 to 8:15 p.m.
Advance reservations, indicating the number in your party and the desired seating time, may be made by calling parish administrator Corky Smith at 947-0156 or by e-mail at stjohns@midmaine.com.
The cost is $11 for adults and $6 for children, payable at the door.
The choir members will be busing and waiting on tables and will graciously accept your tips.
Proceeds will help fund scholarships for the young singers to travel to England.
Be sure to sign up for the Longest Wheelchair Basketball Game, which runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, April 21, at the University of Maine field house in Orono.
Part of UMaine’s observance of National Youth Service Day, which is today and tomorrow, the event also is part of Greek Week and UMaine’s Disability Awareness Day.
The goal of the event is not only to increase awareness about disabilities, but also to raise money for Maine Adaptive Sports and Recreation, which is providing wheelchairs for this event.
The Longest Wheelchair Basketball Game is sponsored by several UM organizations and departments as well as United Cerebral Palsy of Northeastern Maine, the Center for Community Inclusion, and Coca-Cola Bottling of Bangor.
Participants are asked to organize a team of eight players or register as a single player to be added to a team. Those who collect as least $30 in pledges will receive a T-shirt.
Organizers hope that 300 people will participate.
Registration and pledge forms are available at the VOICE office, 229 Alumni Hall, or at the information desk at the Memorial Union, both on the UMaine campus.
For those who would like to watch the game, it is free and open to the public.
If you have questions, call Muffy Eastman, coordinator of student community service and volunteer programs, at 581-4194.
