One or more burglars broke into the Newburgh town office earlier this week, forcing open cabinets and desk drawers but seemingly taking nothing of value.

The break-in is believed to have occurred sometime late Sunday night or early Monday morning, reported Sgt. William Birch of the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Department. Birch said that it wasn’t known how many people were involved.

Arriving at the scene Monday, Birch and Deputy Rod McKenna found that entry was made by breaking a window in the back. Almost every locked door, desk drawer and cabinet file was forced open, the sergeant said. Money and computer equipment weren’t touched, although officials are expected to get a fuller accounting of anything missing by town officials later.

Birch said anyone with information about the incident or who may have seen something suspicious or unusual in the area can contact the Sheriff’s Department at 947-4585.

Padlocks were cut outside two storage areas in Bangor late Wednesday or early Thursday morning.

In one incident, a contractor reported that a lock was cut outside a portable trailer located by Center and Congress streets and a circular saw worth $120 was taken. Bangor police Officer Chris Desmond also reported receiving a complaint from Broadway, where bolt cutters had apparently been used to remove a padlock on a storage facility, although nothing appeared to have been taken.
