Lord drives Colby past Tufts; Husson softball team sweeps

WATERVILLE – Jon Lord rapped a double, triple, and had two RBIs to lead Colby to a 4-1 victory over Tufts Friday afternoon.

Andy Tripp followed up with two singles and the other two RBIs for the White Mules.

Evan Zupansic doubled and scored on Jon Hebert’s single to record the only run for the Jumbos of Medford, Mass.

At Waterville, the University of Maine-Farmington won both ends of a doubleheader against the University of Maine-Presque Isle, 9-2 and 9-1.

Pilgrims shut out twice

At Biddeford, the University of New England shut out New England College twice in a Commonwealth Coast Conference doubleheader.

Michele Plant and Kalina Cuarisma paced UNE in the first game with two singles apiece. Renee Hellert had two singles for NEC.

Nor’easter pitcher Sarah Bernier carried a no-hitter into the seventh before the Pilgrims rapped back-to-back singles.

Husson sweeps UM-Farmington

At Bangor, the Braves shut out the Beavers in a doubleheader sweep, taking the first game 2-0 and the second game 7-0.

In the first game, Husson’s Kelly Dow allowed five hits, all singles. Sami Hibbard hit a double and a single and Nikki Steinhart had an RBI double. Andrea Benanti, Dorice Reitchel, Becky Roak, Melissa Foster and Melissa LeMar each singled for UMF.

In the second game, Tina Tobin and Dawn Doucette hit back-to-back singles to drive in the first two runs in the first inning en route to the win. Doucette finished with two RBIs and Erin Weston added a single and an RBI. Foster and Reitchel singled for the Beavers.

At Norton, Mass., Thursday, Colby College defeated Wheaton with eight goals in the second half.

Allyson King broke a first-half tie with a goal in the last 12 minutes of the game. She went on to score four goals.
