The cause of a train derailment Thursday morning north of Lincoln still is under investigation, according to officials from Guilford Railway.
The 42-car train carrying particleboard was traveling from Mattawamkeag to Bangor when it jumped the tracks near a car dealership off Route 2 at about 10:30 a.m.
Guilford spokeswoman Cynthia Scarano on Friday said the company still needed to bring the derailed cars back to the company’s headquarters in North Billerica, Mass., before a cause could be determined.
Scarano said the company hoped to have a cause by Monday or Tuesday.
The Guilford derailment was the second in central Maine within 12 hours.
The first happened around midnight Wednesday, when a Bangor & Aroostook Railroad train left the tracks in a remote area about four miles north of Brownville Junction.
The derailed cars were carrying molten sulfur, but investigators say none of the cargo leaked and there was no apparent environmental damage.
An official from that rail line, reached early Friday, said a cause had not yet been determined.
No one was injured in either incident.
