BURLINGTON, Vt. – The University of Maine scored just three runs in the first three games of the weekend before exploding for eight in a college softball win over Vermont on Sunday.

The Black Bears scored four runs in the second inning en route to an 8-1 victory in the second of two games Sunday to salvage a win after dropping two games Saturday (1-0 and 4-3) and the early game Sunday (1-0) to the Catamounts.

In Saturday’s opener, Vermont’s Jamie Sawyer’s single in the bottom of the 10th scored Cheri Toms for the game-winning run. The win snapped the Catamounts’ 17-game losing streak. Erica Sobel, Sara Asadoorian, Lauren Dulkis and Rachel Bain each singled for the Black Bears.

In Saturday’s late game, Vermont rallied for three runs in the bottom of the fifth, including a Maggie Tieman sacrifice fly that allowed two runs to score and put the Catamounts up for good. Ashley Yuhas’ RBI double and a Sobel RBI single gave Maine an early lead.

In Sunday’s first game, Jamie Sawyer broke up a scoreless game in the sixth inning when she came in on a Tieman double. The Black Bears managed just a single apiece from Sobel and Katherine Churchill.

In Sunday’s nightcap, Maine’s Melissa Mather singled three times, while Amanda Stevens and Bain each chipped in with two RBIs. Carrie Green struck out five in the win. Kristy Winberg doubled for Vermont.

UMF takes two over Husson

At Bangor, on Saturday, the University of Maine at Farmington took both games of a doubleheader over Husson College, 4-3 and 7-2.

In game one, Becky Roak ripped a home run for the Beavers while Rachelle Dube rapped two singles.

Dawn Doucette and Nikkie Steinhart each nailed two singles for the Braves as Sami Hibbard singled with an RBI.

In game two, Roak and Molly Leopin each notched a double and a single to lead UMF to another win.

Andrea Bennett, Dorice Ritwelle, and Sarah Topham each singled for UM-Farmington.

Hibbard ripped a double and a single for the Braves while Dawn Doucette nailed an RBI double.

Thomas sweeps weekend series

At Waterville, the Terriers pounded out 46 hits in four games and picked up two wins against Lyndon State Saturday (8-3 and 9-1) and two against Johnson State Sunday (20-1 and 11-0).

In Saturday’s first game, Courtney Corbett sparked Thomas with a first-inning grand slam. Corbett added a triple and Tracey Ayotte had a double. In Saturday’s second game, Corbett doubled and tripled to lead Thomas.

In Sunday’s opener, Erin Lovely racked up a double and two singles as the Terriers had 18 hits. In Sunday’s nightcap, Heather Farrell tossed a one-hitter. Corbett drove in two runs on a single and a triple.

St. Joseph’s sweeps Husson

At Bangor, Cortney Sirois racked up five hits in and six RBIs in two games as the Monks swept the Braves 11-4 and 5-0 in a Sunday doubleheader.

In the first game, Sirois homered, scored three runs and drove in four. Erin Weston led Husson with three singles and two RBIs. Kelly Dow doubled and drove in a run.

In the second game, Kristin Gaudette pitched a no-hitter, strking out one and walking four.

Husson takes two over UMF

At Bangor, on Saturday, Husson College rolled past the University of Maine at Farmington in both games of a doubleheader, 8-1 and 11-0.

In game one, John Montgomery pitched a complete game with five strikeouts and also went 4-for-4 at the plate with and RBI while Tony LaPrino tallied two RBIs for the Braves.

Bryant Williams went 2-for-3 with a double and Mike Fullerton ripped an RBI triple for the Beavers.

In game two, Don Sawyer went 4-for-5 with an RBI while Jason Folsom tallied a home run and three RBIs and pitcher Rob Worcester struck out 14 while spinning a one-hitter.

Mike Fullerton notched a single for UMF.

At Gorham Saturday, the University of Southern Maine picked up two wins over the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth in a doubleheader, 15-7 and 5-3.

In game one, Pat Toomey notched a home run and a double with five RBIs while Jody Curcuru also homered and had five hits on the day for the Huskies. In game two, Shaun Richardson nailed the game-winning double for USM.

At Boston, Jason Dority rapped six hits and drove in nine runs to power the Huskies of Gorham past the Beacons in a Sunday doubleheader 25-7 in the first game and 10-8 in the second.

In the first game, Southern Maine scored nine runs in the first inning. Craig Gureckis hit three doubles and finished with seven RBIs. Dority and Gureckis also homered. In the second game, the Huskies rallied from a two-run deficit in the fourth. Dority had three RBIs and Jody Curcuru doubled twice.

At Waterville, the Jumbos rallied for a 9-7 win in the first game of doubleheader thanks to six White Mule errors in the fifth and sixth innings combined. Tufts took the second game 19-0.
