Shead holds off Machias for win

EASTPORT – The Shead Tigers opened their high school baseball season with an 8-6 victory over the Machias Bulldogs Monday.

Ben Maloney and Cliff Urquhart led Shead with two singles and two runs scored each.

John Ingersoll singled twice.

Kevin Loughlin notched three singles for the Bulldogs, and Todd Stevens and Erik Millay added two singles apiece.

At Bangor, D.R. Alley carried Jonesport-Beals with a double, a single and two RBIs.

Jimmy King (2 RBIs), Darren Kelley, and Billy Merchant stroked two singles apiece.

Corey Jeskey and Dave Chrisos notched three singles apiece for Bangor Christian. Matt Conley and Ben Sobey recorded a single and two RBIs each.

Hermon 4, Caribou 3

At Hermon, Adam Duplisea raced home from third with the winning run in the seventh on a grounder to second by Phil Cayford. Duplisea singled to right, advanced to second on a passed ball and took third on a Ron Lane single.

Ryan Garland earned the win for Hermon by holding Caribou to five hits while striking out nine and walking three. Cayford chipped in with an RBI double and Duplisea singled twice.

Travis Snell smacked an RBI double and RBI single for Caribou and Nick Chasse added an RBI single.

At Harrington, Mike Hardy turned in a 5-for-5 effort with a two-run home run and four singles with an RBI to pace the Tigers of East Sullivan.

Josh Phinney chipped in with a three-run home run, an RBI double and two singles for the winners.

Gene Stewart singled twice and drove in two runs for the Knights and Larry Fickett added two singles and an RBI.

At Harrington, pitcher Ashley Woodward struck out 15 batters to lead Narraguagus to victory.

Autumn Courchaine carried Narraguagus with three singles and an RBI. Sister Brooke Courchaine recorded a double, a single, and two RBIs. Becky Robitaille, Kate Farnsworth, and Sarah Snider hit two singles and batted in a run each.

Tess Bickford recorded the only hit for Sumner with a single.

At Eastport, Leann Pritchard scored from third with the winning run in the seventh on a Tracy Guptill groundout to shortstop. Pritchard reached on a single, stole second and advanced to third on an infield groundout.

Logan Davis paced Machias with a triple, single and two RBIs and Pritchard added three singles.

Leah Moore cranked a grand slam for Shead and Sara Ricker chipped in with a two-run home run and two singles. Natalie Smith contributed three singles.

At Bangor, Danielle Miller notched three singles to carry Bangor Christian.

Andrea Sage, Nicole Pelletier, and Alicia Phinney had two singles each for the Patriots.

Chelsea Carver, Abby Alley, and Monique Emerson notched a single apiece for Jonesport-Beals.

At Hermon, Megan Cole-Karagory doubled, singled twice and drove in three runs to power the Vikings.

Jamie Landeen and Michelle Snell each added three singles for the winners.

Krystal Terrill had a triple and run-scoring single for the Hawks and Tonya Laughlin added an RBI double.

At Belfast, Morgan Crandall fired a two-hitter to lead the Lions past the Huskies.

Crandall also chipped in at the plate with two singles, while Kelsey Bryant had the only run batted in of the game in the third inning for Belfast.

Amanda Leavitt had a triple and a single for Maine Central Institute of Pittsfield.

At Rockland, Kirby Gushee handed out six strikeouts to give Rockland their first victory of the season.

Lindsey Grant recorded the only hit for Rockland with a single.

At Thomaston, Jen Rackliffe doubled and rode home on Rachel Campbell’s one-out fifth-inning triple as Georges Valley snapped a 5-5 tie. The Buccaneers added an insurance run in the sixth.

Campbell also had a double and two singles and Crystal Rogers had four singles and two RBIs to back the 14-strikeout complete game of freshman Lindsey Barlow.

Kendra Anderson had two doubles and a single good for two RBIs for Dirigo and Jessica Blaisdell contributed two base hits.

At Blue Hill, Kelly White held George Stevens to two hits, striking out nine batters.

Heather Pelletier led the Golden Bucks with a triple, two singles and four RBIs. Jessica Taylor followed up with three singles and three runs scored. White offered two singles and an RBI.

Jamie Wood notched a triple for George Stevens, and Nikki Kenistion bunted a single.

At Bangor, equal efforts from Megan Huckins, Jen Jimmo and Meghan Chase who contributed two singles apiece, led Bangor to victory.

Annie Levanson-Falk, Amelia Mitchell-Storer, and Ashley Cluff hit a single apiece for John Bapst.
