Tigers pounce in 4th, top Pirates

GUILFORD – A seven-run fourth inning and solid pitching from Karen Nelson gave the Dexter Tigers a 9-6 softball victory over the host Piscataquis Pirates Wednesday.

Cindy Koscielny singled twice for two RBIs to pace Dexter. Freshman catcher Sarah Wyman threw out two baserunners on three attempts.

Alice White-Cyr, Lacie Hanscome, and Greta Korsman each singled for the only PCHS hits.

At Blue Hill, Nikki Keniston rapped a triple and a single for two RBIs to lead the Eagles.

Sarah Clapp drove in two runs on a single and a double. Elise Bishop hit a double and a single and added one RBI. Jesse Conley struck out seven in five innings.

Megan Russell paced the Patriots of Milo.

At Pittsfield, Jenn Cummings scattered six hits to earn the win for Maine Central Institute.

A double play turned by second baseman Katie Adams to shortstop Amanda Leavitt to first baseman Mary Lancaster aided MCI in the fifth. Jasmine Jones paced the offense with a triple and double and Kristen Stevens stole home on the catcher’s throw back to the pitcher.

Candace Sousa doubled for Mount View of Thorndike.

At Belfast, Morgan Crandall struck out 10, including two in the top of the seventh inning with a runner on third to end the game and seal the win for the Lions.

Crandall also scored the winning run in the third when she singled, stole second, went to third on a Mylie Collins fielder’s choice, and scored on a Kelsey Bryant single. Bryant added a triple and another RBI, and Collins had a double.

Winslow’s Katie Gagne struck out six in the loss. Six players singled for the Black Raiders.

At Dover-Foxcroft, Rebecca Stevens went 3 for 4 with a double, two singles, and three RBIs to lead the Crusaders of Bangor to victory.

Laura Roach smacked two doubles for the winners. Levinson-Faulk had a double, a single, and two RBIs.

This was the first softball matchup played on the Ponies’ new multi-million dollar facility. Throwing out the ceremonial first pitch was longtime softball coach and athletic director Pete Caruso.

Mandy Murray had a two-run double in the loss for Foxcroft.

At Rockland, Linda Horan belted a triple to lead the Eagles of South China to victory.

Kelsey Cloutier, Kelly Gerrard, and Kally Thomas had two singles apiece for the winners.

Stephanie Fogarty, Ashley Lowe, and Jessica Clark all had a pair of singles for the Tigers.

At Guilford, Drake Martell’s two-run single powered a fifth-inning Piscataquis Pirates’ rally en route to the win.

Martell finished with two singles and two RBIs for Piscataquis. Buddy Leavitt doubled, singled and drove in a run. Josh Watson hit a double and a single.

Dan Fields led the Tigers with a solo homer and a single. Derek Sawyer singled twice for two RBIs and Matt Foster knocked in two runs on a double and a single. Aaron Thomas tallied an RBI, a double and a single.

At Blue Hill, pitchers Josh Gott, Dusty Bates and Travis Bannister combined to allow two hits and strike out eight as the Eagles rolled.

Simeon Allen led GSA’s offense with two singles and three RBIs. Jake Lowell smacked a two-run triple, Chris Sargent singled twice and knocked in a run, and Mike Astbury tallied two singles.

Chuck Wooten and David Bessy each singled for the Patriots of Milo.

At Dover-Foxcroft, Zach Means belted a two-run triple to pace the Crusaders of Bangor to victory.

Brandon Gray also had two RBIs for the winners, on a double.

Like their softball counterparts, the Ponies opened their new multi-million dollar field. Throwing out the first ball was former UMaine player Roger Davis. Davis, a big supporter who helps out with the baseball team, has served as a custodian at the school for 20 years.

Joe Ronco smacked an RBI triple for the Ponies.

At Belfast, Matt Woodrow and Nick Faulkingham combined to strike out 13 batters, with Faulkingham striking out the side in the top of the seventh to save the victory for Woodrow (10 strikeouts) and the Lions.

Ben Cowan belted an RBI double. Woodrow had the go-ahead RBI single in the sixth to put the Lions up for good. Faulkingham then pitched the seventh to earn the save.

Wes Zemrak blasted a two-run homer for the Black Raiders.

At Pittsfield, the Mustangs took advantage of three errors and two walks by the Huskies, and a three-run double by Lex Meagher, to score seven runs in the sixth en route to the win.

Brian Bernosky chipped in with an RBI single for Mount View of Thorndike.

Jake Laselle and Steve Kennedy each hit an RBI double for Maine Central Institute. Tom Twombly added two singles.

At Rockland, the Tigers plated six runs in the first two innings and made them stand up despite two late rallies by Erskine Academy of South China.

Tigers reliever Blair Drinkwater entered the game with the bases loaded and one out in the top of the sixth, just after the visiting Eagles had scored two runs, and snuffed out the rally with two strikeouts.

Casey Kenniston led Rockland with two singles and an RBI. Drinkwater delivered a key hit with a two-out, two run single in the second inning.

Garrett Joslyn and Zeb Potter each hit an RBI double for the Eagles.

At East Sullivan, Mike Cowperthwaite pitched a four-hitter and struck out 13 to lead the Sumner Tigers.

Ricky Sprague’s two-run, one-out single in the bottom of the seventh gave the Tigers the win.

Matt Mercier slammed an RBI double for Searsport, Ben Relyea tripled and Jerod Kronholm had an RBI single. Hard-luck loser Pasco Grove struck out nine.

At Camden, Pat Aylward went the distance for the ‘Jammers, giving up only two hits and fanning nine as Camden Hills blanked the Eagles of Newcastle.

Tom Massey belted a two-run triple for the winners. Pete Moro had a two run single.

David Whitney all singled for Lincoln Academy.
