BANGOR – With all of the quirky little things that happened in Thursday’s Bangor-Brewer softball matchup, it’s a good thing Jen Jimmo’s pitching effort didn’t get lost in the shuffle.
In fact, after the game ended, there was more conversation in the dugout about Jimmo’s one-hitter than the broken aluminum bat in the second inning and Kerri Tuck’s fine base-running – including a steal of home plate. Altogether, though, it added up to a 3-0 Bangor victory at the high school field here.
The junior righthander needed just 59 pitches (including 41 strikes) over the seven innings to put away the Witches. She had one strikeout and one walk, sticking with a fastball and throwing in an occasional drop.
Jimmo said she tried not to think about the possibility of a no-hitter, which she had until the top of the seventh.
“I didn’t want to break my concentration,” Jimmo said. “I felt pretty good going in … I was ready.”
Meanwhile, the Bangor defense recorded 15 put-outs, five fly-outs and a double play behind Jimmo.
The Rams, now 3-0, scored the eventual winning in the first inning and tacked on two more in the second.
Each run seemed to have something quirky about it.
Tuck led off the first with a single; advanced to second on a throwing error and reached third on a Megan Huckins single. With the runners at first and third, Huckins took off for second, the Witches threw to second, and Tuck scampered home.
“We made mistakes and they got runs off of them,” Brewer coach Kelly Cookson said. “I guess you could say that our inexperience hurt us today.”
Ashley Tower sparked Bangor in the second inning when she singled with two outs, advanced to second on Tuck’s second single of the game, and scored on a Jimmo single. With Tuck on second and Jimmo at first, Brewer junior pitcher Sherri Capponi hit Rachael Dube to load the bases before walkingand Huckins to force in the third run.
The next batter, Samantha Warner, had an 0-1 count when she fouled off a pitch. But the loud ping of the aluminum bat indicated this was no plain foul ball.
Sure enough, Warner’s cut had taken off the bottom of the brand-new bat.
As well as the Rams played in the field, and as smartly as they ran the bases, most of the offense is still coming from the top of the order. That’s something Bangor coach Lisa Richards wants the team to work on.
“We want to establish good hitting one through nine [in the lineup],” she said. “It’s early. We’re still looking for combinations. We want to be able to hit the ball through the infield and a lot of that comes down to pitch selection.”
Katie Freeman registered Brewer’s only hit, a leadoff single in the seventh.
The loss obscured Capponi’s fine effort in the middle and late innings. After giving up five hits, two walks all three runs in the first two innings, Capponi settled down. The Rams got just two more hits in the game and no base-runners past first base.
Capponi also had two strikeouts.
“She wasn’t mentally prepared to play the first two innings and then she did fine after that,” Cookson said. “This is varsity. You have to come ready to play on the first pitch.”
