Costigan man drives car into Penobscot

COSTIGAN – A Costigan man was not injured in an accident Friday morning that sent his car plunging into the seasonally high waters of the Penobscot River.

Tedd Williams, 26, was traveling north on Route 2 about 8 a.m. when he dozed off at the wheel of his 1989 Buick Regal just north of Burr’s General Store, according to Sgt. John Skroski of the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Department. The car drifted across the southbound lane, into a ditch, down an embankment and into the river, which was higher than usual due to the spring thaw.

The car was prevented from traveling farther into the river by the tree it struck before coming to a rest in about 3 feet of water, Skroski said.
