Pitchers help Bears win four Maine beats up Hofstra

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – The University of Maine baseball team exploded for eight runs in the first four innings in the second game of a Sunday doubleheader, including five runs in the fourth inning, to earn an 8-4 victory and cap a four-game weekend sweep of Hofstra.

Maine won Sunday’s first game 4-3. The Black Bears had swept Saturday’s twinbill, winning 4-0 and 2-1 behind the pitching of Rusty Tucker and Simon Stoner, respectively.

In Sunday’s first game, Maine’s Joe Drapeau hit an RBI double in the top of the seventh to score Aaron Young for the game-winning run.

Drapeau also hit two singles. Keith Genest hit a two-run double in the Bears’ three-run fourth inning and Mike Collar gave up gave up seven hits while striking out four and walking two to improve to 6-0.

Jerry Gambardella led Hofstra with two singles.

In Sunday’s nightcap, the Black Bears exploded for eight runs in the first four innings, including five in the fourth inning, en route to the win.

Alain Picard recorded a pinch-hit RBI double in the fourth and Pat Tobin had a two-run double later in the inning. Mike Livulpi doubled and singled twice. Mike MacDonald of Camden scattered eight hits while striking out five and walking two.

Hofstra’s Jason Gumnitz hit three singles. Ryan Cosentino (2-5) took the loss.

In Saturday’s opener, Tucker continued his domination of league opponents while pitching his fourth straight complete game, a three-hit shutout, improving to 6-1.

The junior lefthander struck out seven and walked three. Tucker also pitched out of an error-induced, bases-loaded, one-out jam in the first inning.

Quin Peel paced UMaine with a double and two singles, including an RBI single in the fourth that gave the Bears the lead for good. Matt Reynolds doubled, singled and drove in a run, while Mike Livulpi and Pat Tobin each stroked run-scoring singles.

Gerald Auth (4-4) spread out nine hits in taking the loss.

In Saturday’s second game, Simon Stoner (5-2) scattered six hits, striking out six and walking three.

UMaine scored both of its runs in the sixth off loser Nelson Villalobos (3-5), who pitched an eight-hitter. Drapeau singled to left and moved up on Jon Hambelton’s single to right-center.

Peel advanced the runners with a sacrifice bunt and Tobin followed with a two-run double to left.

Hofstra scored its run in the bottom of the inning. Joe Farley led off with a single, moved up on a groundout and scored on Adam Russ’ two-out single to left.

Hambelton singled three times to lead the Bears. Farley singled twice for the Pride.
