SAD 27 pupils take part in oral history project

WALLAGRASS – SAD 27 pupils joined together to get information about what life was like in the early 20th century. The project, funded by a $2,000 grant from MBNA, was presented to pupils by volunteers of the Allagash Public Library.

Pupils were challenged to gather stories from their grandparents’ generation. Sixty-eight pupils took part, interviewing parents, grandparents and other senior citizens and then writing the stories told to them.

The resulting stories were published in a book, “My Grandpa Said …,” which was presented to pupils April 24 at the Wallagrass Elementary School. Wallagrass had the largest number of pupils involved in the project.

Faye Hafford, Allagash Public Library volunteer, thought of the idea. Once the stories were written, Bryan Jandreau, library secretary, and his wife, Randi, printed them and designed the book, volunteering many hours in its preparation and the post-printing follow-up.

The youthful authors each received two copies of the finished book, one for themselves and one for the person they interviewed.

Copies also were presented to the superintendent of schools, area school libraries, town libraries, historical societies and teachers who had pupils involved in the project.
