Cookbook lovers are a strange breed. Some of them have full bookcases in their kitchens and they don’t even like to cook. Yet they can’t resist the lure of a delicious-looking cover or the glossy, step-by-step instructions inside. Others actually collect them because they can cook (or try to) – this tidbit is for them. The International Association of Culinary Professionals has named its cookbook award winners for books published in 2000. The IACP Cookbook of the Year Award goes to Regan Daley for “In the Sweet Kitchen: The Definitive Guide to the Baker’s Pantry” (Random House Canada, $34). For a complete list of this year’s winners, visit www.iacp.com.

Fromage fiesta

If you’re planning to celebrate Cinco de Mayo, check out the American Dairy Association’s Web site (www.ilovecheese.com) to add a cheesy twist to your party. There, you’ll find recipes for Fiesta Crab Nachos and Three Cheese Mexican Lasagna created by chefs Mary Sue Milliken and Susan Feniger, formerly of the Food Network’s “Too Hot Tamales” show. The dairy association also suggests adding an authentic twist to your Mexican dishes with cheeses such as queso blanco, panela, Oaxaca and anejo. Or, you can turn up the heat by making your own jalapeno poppers. Simply slice jalapenos, remove seeds and stuff with cream cheese.

Steamy stuff

There’s nothing like steamed lobster or clams in the summertime. There’s also nothing like the smell it leaves in your house. L.L. Bean has the solution: the Backyard Cookall, an aluminum outdoor steamer that looks similar to a barbecue grill. It’s fueled by propane, which is not included in the $125 price. For information, call (800) 221-4221 or visit www.llbean.com.
