Vanidestine, Rams cruise past Indians

OLD TOWN – There wasn’t much to complain about when it came to the effort turned in Tuesday afternoon by Bangor starting pitcher Joe Vanidestine.

The only people complaining were Old Town’s hitters and Bangor’s outfielders.

“I think they only had three or four hits beyond the infield today,” said Vanidestine. “Ryan [Worcester], Matt [Anderson], and Andy [Sullivan] said ‘Geez, thanks a lot Joe. We’re bored out here.’ ”

Only five balls made it beyond the infield and no outfield putouts were recorded as the Rams notched their fourth win in five games with a 15-3 decision over the Indians at Old Town High School.

“Joey threw about as well as he could this early in the season and the big thing was his curve was being thrown for strikes,” said Rams coach Jeff Fahey. “When he threw it, it was almost always in the same spot, right at the knees, and they had trouble handling it.”

Bangor’s senior lefty threw 70 of his 117 pitches (60 percent) for strikes, striking out 10 batters and walking three as he limited Old Town to five hits and one earned run in 6? innings of work.

“His fastball has average speed, but when he’s throwing that curve like he did today, it makes the fastball seem that much faster, especially when everyone starts sitting on the curve,” said coach Jay Kemble, whose Indians go to 3-3.

Senior third baseman Justin Libbey led Bangor’s 16-hit attack with a two-run homer to dead center in the first inning and a two-out, two-run single in the sixth.

“The way Joe pitched today, you get kind of bored standing around, so it was kind of nice to get back up at bat every time,” said Libbey, who also made a handsome defensive play with a lunging stab of a hot liner down the third-base line and a bullet throw to first for the out.

Libbey was one of four multiple hitters for the Rams. Leadoff man and center fielder Worcester was 3-for-5 with an RBI double in the seventh. Josh Johnson and Kevin Proctor each had a double, single, and one RBI.

“This is the first game where we’ve come out and hit the ball all the way through the lineup,” Libbey said.

After Old Town got one of the runs back in its half of the first on Brian Tewhey’s solo shot over the right center field fence, Bangor tacked on two more in the second on Sullivan’s RBI double to left- center and the first of Chris Bombardier’s two sacrifice flies.

Bangor scored three in the fourth on four hits, but the Indians took advantage of two Bangor errors in the next half-inning with two unearned runs. Five unearned runs in the seventh capped the Rams’ scoring barrage.

Old Town junior and first-year varsity player Andy Young pitched on short notice as scheduled starter Jason Robbins was held out for unspecified disciplinary reasons. Robbins will pitch later this week.
