Atkinson single gives Cougars win

SHERMAN STATION – Doug Atkinson singled in the game-winner in the bottom of the seventh to lift Katahdin to a 5-4 high school baseball victory over Southern Aroostook on Thursday.

Atkinson added another single, a triple, and an RBI. Chris McNally notched a pair of singles, a triple, and drove in a run.

Corey Shields belted a two-run homer for the Warriors of Dyer Brook. Jared Grant hit two singles.

At Bingham, Dan Campbell’s two-run double and Richard Folsom’s run-scoring single keyed a seven-run second-inning rally that broke the game open.

Tom Mason had a double and a single, drove in two runs, and scored three times for the winners and Rory Owens contributed a triple.

Charlie Rollins and Corey Hibbard each doubled and singled for Valley and Jeremy Jones had two base hits. Rollins had three RBIs while Hibbard and Jones had one each.

At Lee, Jeremy Ham hit a game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the eighth as the Pandas won a wild one.

Bruce Stevens belted two homers, a two-run shot and a solo blast, for the winners. Matt Corbin hit an RBI single and a double. Blair Emery added a double and two singles. Franklin Grant got out of a seventh-inning jam to force extra frames. He struck out five in two innings, including the side in the eighth.

Randy Burgess blasted a two-run homer for the Pirates of Guilford. Dennis Glynn had a pair of RBI doubles.

At Orono, Ron Lane’s run-scoring single broke a 3-3 tie in the two-run sixth-inning rally and he had one of four seventh-inning RBI singles as Hermon remained undefeated.

Jason Shorey, Matt Watson, and Mike Ketchum had the other RBI singles in the seventh as Hermon built an 8-3 cushion.

Lane had three singles while Ketchum, Watson, Josh Shorey and winning pitcher Ryan Garland contributed two apiece. Ketchum and Lane had two RBIs each, Watson had one, and Garland had a double among his hits.

Mike Merritt had a double and two singles for Orono with Bo Thomas, Ryan Levesque, and Pat Skall chipping in two base hits apiece. Levesque had an RBI and Alex Bagley had a two-run single.

At Corinth, Dan Frost hit a single to left field in the top of the eighth that scored Dan Qualey and Jason Cummings and lifted the Minutemen to the win.

Nick Beaulieu hit a two-run double and added a single for Stearns of Millinocket. Ryan Sweeney singled twice and drove in two runs. Matt Burnett hit a triple and single and added an RBI.

Mike Strout paced the Red Devils with a double, single, and three RBIs. James Gray drove in two runs on two singles. Billy Kane and Joe Allen each singled twice and tallied an RBI.

At Sherman Station, Megan Libby cracked a grand slam in Katahdin’s 10-run fourth inning to spark the victory.

Michaeline Duffy chipped in with two singles, a double, and two RBIs for the winners, and Lacy Willet singled twice.

Kristi Brooker singled twice and drove in two runs for Southern Aroostook of Dyer Brook.

At Hodgdon, Valerie Lenentine hit a two-run double and an RBI single to lead the Shires to their sixth straight win.

Danielle Hagerman smacked an RBI single for Houlton. Sarah Beasley also hit an RBI single. Rebecca Lenentine hit a double.

Erin Foster had a double, a single, and an RBI for the Hawks.

At Lee, righthander Crystal Moors scattered five hits while walking two to lead Lee.

Danielle Jipson slammed a two-run double for Lee and Ashley Linscott added a run-scoring single.

Ivy Galuski notched an RBI single for Piscataquis Community of Guilford.

At Newport, Lindsey Welch belted a game-winning solo homer leading off in the last of the seventh to lift the Warriors to victory.

Nicole Palmer hit an RBI triple for the winners. Laura Pelkey blasted a triple, and Megan Randlett hit a double and a single.

Leah Cartwright blasted a two-run homer for the Ponies. She also had two singles.

At Ellsworth, Jenny Higgins belted a two-run homer and scored two runs to lead the Witches to victory.

Sherri Capponi pitched a shutout for the winners, going the distance and giving up only two hits, both singles. She also had a single and a double at the plate. Amy Freeman had two singles and scored twice.

Sarah Silsby and Hiedi Chan provided Ellsworth’s only hits with singles.
