BIDDEFORD – A man has been charged with attempted murder and jailed after allegedly shooting his former girlfriend, then turning the weapon on himself.

Robert Bedard, 76, was treated for a superficial wound to the head after Friday night’s shooting at 9 Pine St.

Ellen Petrin, 42, was reported to be in satisfactory condition at a Portland hospital after being shot in the head.

Police said the couple had recently ended their relationship and that the shooting occurred shortly before 7 p.m. when the woman went to check on Bedard, who was described as distraught over the breakup.

Police allege that after a brief conversation Bedard pulled out a weapon and fired at the woman and then himself.

Bedard was found in the apartment doorway, Petrin by the side of the roadway outside.

Both were taken to Maine Medical Center.

Bedard was being held by York County authorities with bail set at $250,000 cash or $500,000 surety.

Biddeford police, who did not immediately describe the specific type of weapon used in the shooting, said they had received no previous reports of domestic-related issues concerning the couple.
