BANGOR – A Portland TV station and Maine Public Radio won top honors Saturday night in the annual Maine Associated Press Broadcasters Association contest.
A Bangor radio station took top honors in the sports category.
Portland’s WGME-TV 13 had six first-place finishes – more than any other station – to win TV Station of the Year in the 2000 contest. WCSH-TV 6, also a Portland station, won first place in the best newscast category.
Maine Public Radio won Station of the Year and WGAN-AM 560 of Portland won best newscast in the radio division.
In sports, Bangor’s WZON-AM 620 won six awards, including best sportscast. WPXT-TV 51 won best sportscast in the TV division.
WGME-TV’s first-place awards were for spot news, public affairs, feature, medical, continuous coverage and election news. WMTW-TV 8 picked up three first-place finishes, including best weathercast.
In the radio division, Maine Public Radio’s first-place awards were for public affairs, enterprise and medical reporting.
