BANGOR – A 24-year-old Bangor man was indicted by a Penobscot County grand jury Monday on a series of charges stemming from a car crash that claimed the life of a 17-year-old Bangor High School senior last December.
The jury handed up indictments against Andrew Rice charging him with manslaughter, criminal operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of intoxicating liquor and operating a motor vehicle after license suspension.
Prosecutors say Rice’s blood-alcohol level was 0.20, more than twice the 0.08 allowed by law.
The accident occurred early on a Saturday morning, Dec. 11, on Outer Essex Street.
Witnesses said the car was speeding before it left the road, smashed through a fence, a telephone pole and a tree before coming to rest a few feet from a sign in the front yard at the Essex Stud Farm. The crash knocked out power to area residents for about five hours.
At the time of the accident, Rice was on probation for other traffic violations.
He is expected to be arraigned on the new charges later this month.
Two people accused of breaking into a Brewer residence and threatening a woman with a gun and a hammer were indicted Monday by the grand jury.
Kelly Bryant, 21, and 18-year-old David Townsend, both of Hampden, were charged with two counts of robbery, burglary and criminal threatening.
Bryant and Townsend allegedly broke into the Burr Street apartment last January and demanded money from the resident there.
The victim told police that she was getting out of the shower when she saw Bryant pointing a gun at her and Townsend holding a hammer.
The victim fled the apartment and called police from an upstairs apartment. Bryant and Townsend were arrested two hours later at their Hampden apartment.
They are scheduled to be arraigned later this month.
Two men were indicted Monday for allegedly kidnapping two men and a woman in Bangor last month and attempting to get money from them.
Deputy District Attorney Michael Roberts said 23-year-old Robert Bishop of Orrington and Miguel Garcia, 26, of Bangor allegedly forced two men and a woman into a car and made them drive around for several hours as they attempted to get money from the threesome.
Roberts said the victims were threatened with knives and one was cut, though not seriously injured.
“Apparently there was a third party who the two victims may have owed money to and these two [Garcia and Bishop] came to enforce that debt,” Roberts said.
The victims eventually were released when Garcia and Bishop realized they had no money, Roberts said.
The two men were charged with three counts of kidnapping, aggravated assault, two counts of criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon and criminal mischief.
Garcia and Bishop are expected to be arraigned later this month.
