You’re asleep in your home; your wife and kids all safe and sound. Suddenly, a 250-pound intruder armed with a stick attacks you. Not four days before, this same man invaded another person’s home, violently assaulting the resident. It took five trained police officers to subdue him.

This intruder has a history of mental illness and has not been taking his medication. According to the Bangor Daily News, the “only” other time this person has had trouble with the police in the last two years was when he mutilated his own genitalia. The system has released this man to society and now he is in your home.

Somehow, you are able to summon the police and the invader ends up being shot by an officer. Two things have just happened. First, you have just had a threat to your family neutralized by someone armed with a gun. Second, your attacker has just become a victim of gun violence, according to Maine Citizens Against Handgun Violence.

Ask yourself this – what could have happened to you if the intruder happened to pick up a common kitchen knife? What if he happened to get into the children’s bedroom? Why would anyone ever support legislators who want to disarm law-abiding citizens?
